Let Me Sleep!!!

On rare occasion I find or read something that is just so applicable to a large group of officers and written BY an officer that I feel the need to share it. In this case a friend of mine, a police officer from a state on the east coast, works the evening shift. She works 1500-0300 regularly and fully expects that the people who know her will be courteous enough NOT to call her after she finally gets to bed at 0600 - at least not until after noon. It appears that a few folks forgot the value of sleep and she felt the need to remind them of it. Here is her rant. I’m sure many of you who have worked that shift (or midnights) can relate and appreciate. Read the rest of this entry »

The Silly Season 2012

It’s that time of year again. The time between Thanksgiving and New Years Day when people are out and about more, spending more money, driving a bit crazier, ignoring the weather as they drive crazier, drinking a bit more, arguing with family more… heck, you all know what I’m talking about. It’s the silly season! Read the rest of this entry »

Veterans’ Day 2011

November 11th, 2011. I’ve seen news stories about how it’s a lucky day because of the date. I’ve seen news stories about something unique in the alignment of the stars. I’ve NOT seen much news about veterans. Today is Veteran’s Day. It is a day we are supposed to set aside to appreciate and express our thanks to those who have served this great nation of ours in a military uniform. Read the rest of this entry »

Evolve or Die

One sure sign of success is when people are so envious of you that they can only express it through anger.” That was something my grandfather told me a LONG time ago. If he was right then Officer.com has been HUGELY successful lately. Not only have we been challenged by unwanted and highly negative media attention but we’ve also been the target of a hacking attempt and some other Internet attacks. Since I seem to be the “face” of Officer.com I’ve also, um, enjoyed some personal attacks in various venues. Using my grandfather’s philosophy, that means Officer.com must be a raging success, right? Professional Demeanor Is Paramount

Before I go any further, I have to reiterate this caveat: Everything written here is the express opinion of only Frank Borelli and does not reflect the opinions, beliefs or outlook of anyone else affiliated with, employeed by or responsible for Cygnus Business Media, Officer.com, or any related “sister” site or print product.

Let me make it simpler: This is a Frank Borelli blog. It’s MY opinion; no one else’s and no one else holds any responsibility for what I say EXCEPT ME.

Now… Next year marks my thirtieth year of involvement in the law enforcement industry. I started out as a Military Police Officer and moved into civilian law enforcement immediately after. A lot has changed in thirty years. One thing that seems not to have changed is what I’ve always heard referred to as “gallows humor.” Let me share an observation…

Remain Vigilant

While plenty of people have jumped on the “End of the World as We Know It in 2012″ bandwagon, I don’t subscribe to the theory. That said, 2011 seems to be hitting us with more challenges than “normal”. Now that we’re two-thirds of the way through the year, stop and think back on it - from a national outlook - and ponder what the next few months may bring. Rest assured, you need to be physically and mentally prepared for it, but what is “it”? Read the rest of this entry »

Law Enforcement Sacrifices?

Frank Borelli

Just yesterday (as I type this) I was in a conversation with a neighbor about law enforcement professionals and the sacrifices we make. My neighbor’s question was, “Outside of the cops who have been killed, what sacrifices have been made?” I was struck by how narrow a point of view that is. When we stop to think about it, sacrifices are made all the time: they’re just not as obvious as a dead cop. Read the rest of this entry »

Leader? or Ego-with-Rank?

“I’m not a ’sir’! I work for a living!” Many a service member has heard those words. Sometimes they are shouted and the person, that “not a ’sir’”, is red faced and obviously angry. Other times the words are said with less vehemence and the person saying them is obviously trying to teach a lesson. Most often those words are said to a rookie; a new recruit or trainee who thought ’sir’ was a term of respect and is now being taught better. HOW he (or she) is taught is what separates the leaders from the ego with rank. Read the rest of this entry »

Uncontrolled Rumor Control

Rumor Control: The exact opposite of what it should be. As we all know in law enforcement, rumor control means that people are, in an uncontrolled fashion, spreading false and malicious information just as fast as they can flap their lips and gums. It means nothing is controlled and the “rumors” are usually nothing more than falsehoods/innacurate information being repeated for no apparent good reason. Read the rest of this entry »

Personal Responsibility for Safety

Frank Borelli

This blog entry was inspired by a recent conversation I had with a group of civilian gun owners who are all concealed-carry-license holders and who had paid out of pocket to attend training to enhance their skills. To them I say, “BRAVO!” I commend them for having come out of pocket with their own money and having spent a full day (and I do mean a FULL day - about 12 hours) of their time for the training. My question is, why isn’t every armed civilian doing the same thing? Read the rest of this entry »
